Also called: Yarn count · dtex
Denier measures the linear mass of a fibre or yarn: 1 denier = 1 gram per 9,000 metres. The metric equivalent is dtex (grams per 10,000 metres; 1 denier ≈ 1.11 dtex). In bags and load-carriage equipment, the denier of the main fabric — for example 500D or 1000D polyamide (nylon) — is shorthand for how heavy and abrasion-resistant the yarns are.
Denier alone does not define a fabric. Two 500D fabrics can differ in fibre type, weave, weight per square metre, coating and tear strength. A specification should therefore give denier together with fibre, weave, fabric weight (g/m²), coating and the required abrasion and tear values with their test methods.
