Near-infrared (NIR) reflectance

NIR reflectance describes how a fabric or component reflects near-infrared light, so that it does not stand out when seen through night-vision or NIR imaging.

Also called: IR signature · NIR compliance · IRR

The human eye sees roughly 400–700 nm; night-vision devices and many cameras also see the near-infrared range just above it, roughly 700–1,200 nm. A fabric that looks correctly camouflaged in daylight can appear unnaturally bright or dark in NIR if its dyes and finishes are not controlled. Military specifications therefore often set reflectance limits at defined NIR wavelengths for each colour of a camouflage pattern.

NIR requirements apply to every visible component — main fabric, webbing, thread, zips, buckles and labels — because one bright component can reveal the whole item. If your specification includes NIR values, include them in the request so that every component is sourced to the same requirement.
